If you’ve been asking yourself, “how do I find a leak in my pool?” you’re not alone. Pool leaks can happen for many reasons—cracks, faulty fittings, worn seals, or plumbing issues—and catching them early can save you money and prevent bigger problems. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you identify whether your pool has a leak and how to locate it.

1. Watch for the Signs

Before starting any tests, look for common indicators of a leak:

  • A noticeable drop in water level (more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch per day)

  • Wet or soggy spots around the pool

  • Cracks in the pool shell or deck

  • Air bubbles in the return lines

  • A spike in your water bill

2. Perform the Bucket Test

The bucket test helps determine if water loss is from a leak or normal evaporation.

  • Fill a bucket with pool water and place it on the pool step.

  • Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool water level outside the bucket.

  • Leave it for 24–48 hours without using the pool.

  • If the pool water level drops more than the bucket’s, you likely have a leak.

3. Inspect Pool Equipment

Check the pump, filter, heater, and plumbing connections for visible leaks. Equipment leaks often happen at seals, gaskets, or pipe connections.

4. Examine the Pool Surface

Look for cracks, gaps, or damaged tiles in the pool shell, skimmer, or around lights and fittings. These are common places where water can escape.

5. Use Dye Testing

For suspected leaks at lights, returns, or fittings, use pool-safe dye:

  • With the pool pump off, release a small amount of dye near the suspected area.

  • If there’s a leak, the dye will get pulled into it.
